The
windshield of any vehicle is used as a barrier from the road and other outside elements. But most importantly, it is designed for structural
safety in the event of an accident.
Windshields are the third important safety feature after airbags and seat belts. It’s integral to ask
the right questions to make sure that safety is not compromised.
What is the Technicians’ Training and Qualifications?
Find out how trained and equipped are the technicians
who will be installing the windshields. Proper certification is achieved by an
independent certification company.
Are there any Warranties on the repair work?
Most glass companies offer some guarantee on the work they provide. It is important to ask the
company’s policies before selecting them:
- How long is the warranty due for?
- What does it cover? What doesn’t it cover?
- Does it cover minor accidental cracks? Improper installation?
A warranty is issued to provide
you with the assurance for the glass that the replacement or installation has been done properly and if not, it will be looked after.
What is the Type of Glass used?
A windshield essentially consists of two layers of glass with a material in the middle called
laminated glass. It is made by combining a layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) between two pieces of glass.
It allows the glass to absorb energy on impact and protects from UV rays. It is not easy to break apart or puncture and can withstand the impact of objects hitting the
windshield from time to time.
Is it OEM Windshields or Equivalents?
Always check whether the
windshields are OEM—original equipment manufacturer; or an equivalent, which is similar to the original part but not the same. Always check for the original logo of the manufacturer. The label usually is placed at the bottom of the glass.
What is the Wait Time?
To maximize
the safety, ask the company the minimum wait time after the windshield installation. This time period is for the adhesive to stick to the
windshield before driving. It can vary from 30 minutes to several hours depending on the region’s humidity and temperature.
